THE BOMB

by | Read by George Guidall

Children • 4.5 hrs. • Unabridged • © 1995

It's 1946 and Bikini Island, home to 16-year-old Sorry, is scheduled to be the test site for an atomic bomb. Aware of the effects of radioactive fallout, Sorry realizes that he and his people will never be able to return to the island despite what the Navy officers tell them. He tries to prevent the test even though it means risking his own life. Guidall's interpretation captures the rhythm of island life and the lilt of local speech using subtly differentiated voices. The audio version is more successful than the book; this quiet rendition enhances the drama and horror of the story which is based on actual events.
