ALONG THE WAY The Journey of a Father and Son

This dual memoir is interesting and moving. In alternating chapters, a full 50 years of family history is explained in detail that may be too specific. The narration is also shared. Unlike those of many actors, Sheen’s and his son Emilio’s readings are lackluster—straightforward and sincere but not engrossing. One does not feel drawn in to what is, otherwise, a fascinating spiritual journey. Additionally, much of the narration of the rather unpolished text is a bit sibilant and doesn’t reflect the professional quality of sound one reasonably expects from a major production. This memoir would have been improved by tighter editing with more focus on insights rather than on petty details.
