NEW YORKER stories are notorious for being about rich, sad people to whom nothing happens. This collection shows just how mistaken that prejudice can be. Woody Allen, John Cheever, E.B. White, Nabokov and Thurber are all beautifully represented, along with equally stunning works by those of lesser reputations. Yes, there’s anomie, a sense of loss. Because the collection seeks to highlight thousands of works, it’s, of necessity, all over the map. There are dull precincts here, but there is also a whore and a hand gun.
