A BITTER VEIL

The steady pace set by Diane Gelman takes the listener comfortably on this tumultuous journey from the U.S. to the chaos of the Iranian Revolution. The story unfolds in measured segments, a structure that makes this title ideal for the audio format. Gelman capably delivers the perspective of the female American protagonist. Her rendering of the Iranian male characters is also well done. The dialogue is presented in a lively and engaging manner that draws the reader in. Though the subject matter is somewhat well trodden in both film and literature—an American woman marries an Iranian and becomes trapped in Iran—Gelman does her best to infuse the story with drama.
