THE DOGS OF WAR The Courage, Love, and Loyalty of Military Working Dogs

by | Read by Kate Reading

Contemporary Culture • 6.25 hrs. • Unabridged • © 2011

Beginning with the use of a dog in the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, Kate Reading delivers this history of the use of dogs in war with an easygoing and somewhat understated narration. Focusing on the use of dogs in the U.S. military, the book recounts tales of canines in battle from before WWI to the present. The details of how the dogs are chosen, trained, and interact with their handlers are fascinating. Especially moving, and some folks may have to bring out their handkerchiefs, are the tales of how dogs have saved soldiers' lives and shown their loyalty to their handlers by saving their lives or grieving their loss. There are many quotes throughout the text, and Reading successfully affects masculine- or feminine-sounding voices depending on the speaker's gender.
