THE FISH THAT ATE THE WHALE

by | Read by Robertson Dean

Biography & Memoir • 9 hrs. • Unabridged • © 2012

Robertson Dean’s deep—almost guttural—voice embodies the character of Samuel Zemurray, the subject of Cohen’s biography. Still known in Latin America today for his exploitative practices in the banana trade, Zemurray became one of the world’s richest men in the early to mid-twentieth century as the eventual head of the United Fruit Company. Dean’s skill shines as he balances an abundance of details—not all of which are interesting for listeners— with the more engaging moments of Zemurray’s life. He manages this through emphasis, tone, and even speed. He doesn’t rush through the less engaging parts but certainly does not give them as much vocal attention, which will be relieving for listeners.
