John Lee makes this novel based on the true story of one of the twentieth century's most notorious spies, "Kim" Philby, as riveting an account as a listener could wish for. The author imagines the early years of the British intelligence agent's life, based on reports from classmates, colleagues, contacts, and lovers. Lee invests the numerous characters with varying vocal qualities, appropriate accents, and completely drawn personalities that clearly display their stations and their significance to Philby. Lee's performance brings credible insights into the early techniques of spycraft during WWII and the Cold War as well as offers fascinating character portraits of some of those who influenced the young agent.
