Angela Dawe’s narration mirrors the alternating dry and juicy aspects of the author’s food memoir. After growing up in Germany, Weiss returns to America with her father upon her parents’ divorce, leaving her Italian mother in Germany. As Weiss travels back and forth between Boston and Germany, her heart remains in Europe—with her European family. She spends much of her life trying to re-create her memories, and sense of home, through her cooking. Though clear and articulate, Dawe’s pronunciation is off at times, and her reading increasingly takes on a stilted rhythm, which, like the book, does not savor words or descriptions.
