YOUNG LANCELOT

Arthurian stories call for forceful readings that hint at clashing swords, danger and heroism. Virginia Leishman gives the tale of young Lancelot a slow, wistful reading instead. Her sentimental rendering robs the story of its strength and power. For example, when King Ban views his kingdom in flames, one expects anguish laced with rage. Instead, his voice is ineffectual and weak. In an attempt to honor the lyrical quality of San Souci's prose with a lilting delivery, Leishman has enervated the text, offering a reading that will lack appeal for the very youngsters most likely to enjoy the triumph of Lancelot's story.
