YOUR BLUES AIN'T LIKE MINE

by | Read by Alfre Woodard with Allison Smith

Fiction • 3 hrs. • Abridged • © 1994

Common threads of violence, poverty and sorrow weave together the Todd and Cox families. The murder of a young Todd in rural Mississippi in the 1950s begins the narrative of parallel lives. The two narrators give the story variety and help to shift the scene as we follow first the black Todd family then the white Coxes. Woodard has an especially appealing, sonorous voice. Her deep, modulated tones are almost too low at times and words are missed, but her portrayal makes the characters resonate. Smith's voice is very light and her female characters fare better than the males. This powerful audiobook is recommended. R.F.W. ©AudioFile, Portland, Maine [Published: FEB 95]
