LAURA LAMONT'S LIFE IN PICTURES

Elsa Emerson, a young beauty who grows up acting with her family in their small theater in Door County, Wisconsin, goes to Hollywood and is transformed by a studio into "Laura Lamont, Oscar-winning actress." Tracking her triumphs and tragedies, Molly Ringwald gives a solid performance reading this story of the rise and fall of a bigger-than-life actress in the period from the 1920s to the 1980s. Although she uses her considerable acting skills in her performance, Ringwald makes little effort to give each character a distinct voice or accent, so it is the story rather than the narration that is memorable.
