Katherine Driscoll is facing bankruptcy and the loss of her dog-training business when she's contacted by her estranged father--only to learn of his murder just hours before her arrival at the Austin Zoo. Kate takes a job at the zoo and finds herself a target as she investigates the illicit trade of exotic animals. Katherine is strong yet vulnerable, longing for emotional connections but fearing them. Anna Fields conveys these qualities with apparent ease, as she does the rest of the very different characters. The killer's internal dialogues, read with silky confidence, are chilling. Fields's voice is warm, rich and versatile, giving full measure to Walker's intricate mystery and memorable characters. M.A.M.
