As the second book in Dunmore's Ingo trilogy opens, Sapphire and her family have moved from their seaside cottage into town. As much as she's a child of Earth, Sapphy's Mer blood pulls her back into the sea in quest of her missing father and her own place between Earth and Sea. Will she find him, and will she be able to stop the ever-rising tides? Kate Sachs is an unobtrusive narrator who lets the characters pull the listener into the story. Her elocution is precise as she narrates at a steady pacing--speeding up as Sapphy pieces together the consequences of the rising tide and fading as Sapphy realizes the roles of her Mer friends. Sachs's voicing of Saldowr, the wise merman, is deep and rich, wise and sorrowful. As Granny Carne, former neighbor and Earth force, Sachs's lilt and warmth envelop both Sapphire and the listener.
