FOOD OF THE GODS The Search for the Original Tree of Knowledge: A Radical history of Plants, Drugs, and Human Evolution

by | Read by Jeffrey Kafer

History • 9 hrs. • Unabridged • © 1993

With his deep and authoritative voice, Jeffrey Kafer provides McKenna's book with more legitimacy than some might give it. The book argues that hallucinogenic mushrooms played a key role in human evolution during prehistoric times on the savannas of Africa and that this should motivate us to reconsider our relationships with these drugs today. While the facts are questionable, the narration certainly isn't. Kafer's matter-of-fact voice nudges listeners to consider the possibilities that McKenna is offering. Kafer keeps to a consistent narrative rhythm and does well with emphasis, tone, and pace, maintaining listeners' attention even through the jargon-ridden parts of the book.
