Much has been written about Bruce Springsteen and his music, and some about his upbringing. Peter Ames Carlin digs into the Boss's life and reveals as much as he can, warts and all. It's a rich life, to be sure. Carlin's reporting and writing are exceptional. Bobby Cannavale's narration could not be more appropriate. His deep voice lends gravitas as he stays consistent with characters' accents. The slightly gravelly voice he gives Springsteen makes you feel as if the man himself is speaking. His delivery of Steven Van Zandt's clipped, well-enunciated accent brings the guitarist to mind immediately. Assorted studio executives come and go, each receiving his or her own style. It's a narrator's challenge to avoid campy accents in this production. But Cannavale--like his subject--never misses a beat. M.B. © AudioFile 2012, Portland, Maine [Published: DECEMBER 2012]
