by | Read by Tim Gerard Reynolds, George Guidall, John Curless

Fiction • 35.5 hrs. • Unabridged • © 2012

Narrator Tim Gerard Reynolds takes a low-key yet engaging approach to this alternate-history story of two rival groups in medieval Germany who blame each other, and their gods, for a mysterious and deadly plague. Reynolds wisely avoids accents, instead concentrating on distinct voices, which help listeners keep track of the many characters, human and otherwise. The novel is punctuated with fictional letters between Edward Gibbon and Edmund Burke, read by George Guidall, and capped by dozens of informative endnotes, read by John Curless. Despite the fine performances of the narrators, the novel is ill suited to audio because listeners cannot easily access the details in Curless's endnotes at the relevant points in the long story.
