THE PRETTY ONE A Novel about Sisters

Renee Raudman's deliberate, perfectly articulated delivery cannot save this tale of three unlikable sisters and their alternating displays of five of the seven deadly sins: envy, lust, pride, greed, and wrath. The girls take every opportunity to betray, gossip about, undermine, hurt, and be critical of each other and the other equally unlikable members of their family. Raudman uses slight tonal differences to portray each sister: the obsessive one, who manages everything; the rule-breaking one, who is gay, and the "pretty one." None are memorable, and all are locked in their roles from childhood. None move much beyond where they started. This book is not up to the talents of this prolific narrator. A.C.P.
