Lou Diamond Phillips delivers a superb listen with a voice made for adventure. This is yet another of the tense global scenarios that have always separated Clancy from the herd of thriller writers. This time the plot revolves around Jack Ryan's attempts to prevent a Chinese invasion of Taiwan. Phillips's character definition is good but not great. However, his ability to imbue the narrative with tension and passion more than compensates. He has a real talent for taking a large group meeting, in the Oval Office for instance, and differentiating the many characters without losing the gravitas essential to the setting.
