Narrator Leslie Bellair moves adeptly from a contemporary character back through history as she recounts the lives of generations of Vietnamese women, long before Indochina was dominated by war. Her vocal modulations allow her to depict male and female dialogue in a convincing manner. Instead of a heavy, affected accent for the Asian characters, Bellair infuses the range of female characters with a gentle cadence that is more effective at hinting at their ancestry and culture.
