From its beginning scene of sadistic murder, violent crime competes with erotica as secret agent Micah Sloane, predictably, falls in love with the mark he's trying to protect, the lovely and innocent Risa. Narrator Clarissa Knightly moves effortlessly between innocence and hardness, violence and tenderness, romance and chase scenes. The edge in her voice complements the crime story, yet she banishes it instantly to portray the soft and helpless Risa's words and actions. While the story's outcome is a foregone conclusion, Knightly's narration never loses the excitement or pace of the well-crafted story. The spicy bits provide an added bonus.
