Narrator Lewis Fitz-Gerald's deliberate, unhurried pace captures the contemplative mood of this novel as the secrets of two Australians unfold to reveal the complexity and intensity of human emotions. Fitz-Gerald's easygoing Australian accent characterizes the two even-keeled Australians, John and Ken, as the former recounts the story of meeting his Tunisian wife in Paris and the arrival of their daughter. Fitz-Gerald's transitions from one character to the next are smooth. His vocal range and pitch depict the characters' personality and cultural differences--from the chattering Tunisian men living in Paris and the larger-than-life presence of Sabiha's aunt to the melancholy, mostly unflappable Sabiha herself, who is driven to desperate measures in order to conceive the daughter she believes is waiting for her.
