Graphic and grisly, this mystery concerns a sadistic maniac who, aspiring to the Number One position on the FBI Ten Most Wanted list, begins bumping off his list mates. It boasts fuller characterizations than are normally found in this genre, and gut-churning details of sadistic murders. In the mouth of George Guidall, this stuff almost sounds tasteful. While maintaining suspense, he tones down the gore and concentrates on nuanced characterization. Wherever the text allows, he steers around the direct and obvious and finds an effective road-less-traveled.
