Whether or not one's own mother rhapsodizes about dating the young Elvis Presley, anyone who has faced the task of growing up with attitudes different from a parent's should appreciate Silvie's situation. When her mother's worldly ambitions go unfulfilled, the fallback plan seems to be manipulation of the family realm, for there at least she can be indomitable queen. As Karen White reads, the complexity of parent/child relationships is exposed in earnest. The simultaneous dread, confusion, loathing, and love Silvie feels is plausible, and palpable, in White's fluid, unforced delivery. This audio demonstrates the excellence possible when a good book meets the right reader. D.J. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award. © AudioFile 2001, Portland, Maine [Published: JUN/JUL 01]
