Peter Jay Fernandez makes the Caribbean sing. His perfect English and island lilt bring music to the story of an old woman and her young self. We travel from the almshouse where Mala has been placed back to the house where she lived her whole life and the pain she lived through there. The author describes some amazing characters. Fernandez brings them to life and enlarges them. As they make disastrous decisions, he makes us a part of the tropics, projecting the lusciousness of warmth and palm trees, the scent of blooming cereus. J.P.
