The GQ correspondent, blogger, and author of MEN WITH BALLS narrates this hipster-father memoir at such a fast clip that it sounds forced—not like anybody’s natural speech. His words and phrases are understandable and his voice resonant, but his pacing, along with his nonstop efforts to sound dramatic or funny, makes the author’s venting and observations sound adolescent. To be fair, this is humor and storytelling that is probably aimed at young fathers still adjusting to adulthood; it’s riddled with ribald language and impatience with almost everything. For other listeners, Magery eventually serves up enough insights on family life to make this memoir redemptive, if not always pleasant to hear.
