After a week-long suspension, Julian Twerski's teacher offers him a deal: If he writes a journal and recounts the incident that got him suspended, he can skip his Shakespeare assignment. Julian's journal chronicles the remainder of his sixth-grade year in 1969. Narrator Everette Plen gives Julian an innocence that makes him a likable and sympathetic character. While at times Plen's other character voices are not as distinct, overall his narration has a charm that makes this easy to overlook. As the story unfolds and Julian's involvement in a bullying incident comes to light, Plen's narration adds a nice emotional buildup to the book's conclusion. A humorous and engaging historical novel.
