David Aaron Baker smoothly portrays Odd and his network of unlikely allies, such as 84-year-old Edie Fischer, whom he encounters during his search for a homicidal truck driver with paranormal powers called the Cowboy. Baker adds a note of realism to some pretty strange happenings, such as the ringing of the bell around Odd's neck to awaken him, his psychic ability to track down the Cowboy, and Annemarie's enigmatic appearances and disappearances.
