The first part of a long biography of Lyndon B. Johnson ends when he takes office as vice president in 1960. Lloyd James reads slowly, allowing each period in the text a three-second pause, which seems far too long. His quiet voice fades out at the end of nearly every sentence, doing little to animate or stimulate the pace. Since the material has little spice or humor to begin with, more spark in the form of characterization or vocal changes for the quotations (like a Southern accent for LBJ, for example) could have helped interested scholars absorb this bland treatise.
