Because Gordon Prange's books about Pearl Harbor are so tediously long, this nine-hour audio collection of abridg-ments of At Dawn We Slept, Dec 7, 1941, and Pearl Harbor provides a stunning sample of the author's detail and drama for the "non-major." While there is some overlap between books, the three condensations skillfully avoid redundancy. The excellent quality of the recording allows us to enjoy the control the reader has of his voice, which becomes more tense and urgent as the battle begins. His rendition of Roosevelt's speech to Congress on December 8 sounds almost like the "New Dealer" himself. Short interludes of appropriate music between chapters provide pleasant punctuations.
