As narrator, John Hodgman effectively balances the mundane and the outrageous. His straightforward voice and matter-of-fact tone contrast perfectly with the zaniness of Tom Carmody’s adventures in space. After winning the galactic lottery, Carmody is left in a far corner of the galaxy to find his way back to earth while avoiding an amorphous and relentless predator who wants him dead simply because he left his home planet. Hodgman’s other character voices are equally good, hinting at but never entirely slipping into caricature. Neil Gaiman introduces the audiobook and explains why he chose it for his series, Neil Gaiman Presents, and closes the production with an interview of Hodgman.
