This audiobook begins with a fascinating clip of author Louis L'Amour talking about his work. The three Western short stories that follow are dramatized with panache by an excellent cast of voices. Vivid sound effects, including horses snorting and birds singing, along with fitting music, add to the atmosphere and drama. "A Trail to the West" features L'Amour's famous character Chick Bowdrie; the other two stories recount adventures of the Cactus Kid. Once in awhile, the sound effects make it difficult to hear the narration. But overall, the extra effects fit perfectly into this production full of suspenseful gunfights, heroes, villains, and a little romance. It's all made even more enjoyable by the voice of L'Amour himself. M.M.G. © AudioFile 2013, Portland, Maine [Published: JULY 2013]
