Walters's wrenching novel of true love and mental illness grabs at the heartstrings from the opening scene. Maggie Young has the predictable, boring life of a typical high school senior--until she meets newcomer Clayton Reed. His sweet smile turns her world upside down, but his personal demons could shatter the pair's every hope of happiness. Though Madeleine Lambert's narration isn't as conversational or intimate as the first-person viewpoint requires, she brings Maggie's interactions with Clay to life, making their sarcastic jibes and emotional bond real and gripping. Lambert's early awkwardness with some of the secondary characters fades as the story progresses, providing listeners a fully realized story of heartbreak and redemptive love that is deeply engaging.
