This fourth installment of Reeman's chronicle of the Blackwood family's service in the Royal Marines concerns Captain Michael Blackwood. He is the fifth generation of the Blackwoods to wear the Globe and Anchor, and his service lives up to the highest traditions of his family and the Corps. Reeman sometimes depicts action in places that may not be known to the American listener. This work is no exception. We hear Blackwood leading raids against Italian occupation troops on the Greek Isles, assisting Greek partisans, and preparing the way for the invasion of Sicily. John Nettles has a sonorous, melodically soft voice, versatile and expressive, but by no means weak. His portrayals of characters are especially pleasing. The narration is just as ably done and is especially exciting when Blackwood and his men ambush an Italian gunboat from a Greek fishing vessel, a plot reminiscent of THE GUNS OF NAVARONE.
