THE BROKEN PLACES

Accents and dialects create special challenges for narrators, and their potential pitfalls present themselves as Brian James stumbles with a variety of Southern characters and their drawls. The third novel in Atkins's series finds Sheriff Quinn Colson pursuing two escaped convicts as a tornado devastates the small town of Jericho. James seems to have a hard time developing a cadence in his narration; furthermore, the text itself does not always lend itself to a smooth reading.
