When two husbands disclose their secrets, their disturbing news embroils more than their wives in these intersecting stories. Narrator Caroline Lee conjures the spectrum of emotions associated with the stages of grief--from Cecelia's shock when she discovers the letter containing her husband's confession to Tess's quiet numbness when her husband's confession leads to the loss a friend. Lee's relatively high-pitched voice also emphasizes the loud angry moments as the women process their losses. She's strongest portraying a mother's grief and rage over her daughter's death. While Lee's voice modulations often have an overly sarcastic edge to them, her ability to express a breaking voice, as well as her pacing and timing, dramatically conveys the women's dynamic emotions.
