Leaving London for a position with the Birmingham CID, Kate Power is hoping to leave behind her grief over the death of her partner and lover. She is not expecting overt hostility and blatant gender discrimination at her new job. Despite that and the difficulties of settling into a home in the midst of a total renovation, Powers refuses to be relegated to a peripheral role in the investigation of a serial killer who preys on young boys. Patricia Gallimore narrates in an even, restrained manner that fits the personality and attitudes of Power. Her presentation is well paced and reflects both the hesitation of one trying to fit in and not overreact and the resilience and deliberation of a strong character facing obstacles. Gallimore also uses accents effectively in dialogue to distinguish her characters. J.E.M. © AudioFile 2001, Portland, Maine [Published: AUG/ SEP 01]
