Harlan Crownover sees the future of cars, while his father, who amassed a fortune manufacturing carriages, does not. A battle between the generations is at the center of Loren Estleman's historical novel. Estleman's detailed research is evident. Although the content is dry and much of the novel is spent on character development, narrator Paul Hecht keeps the book moving. In particular, Hecht's portrayals of Irish political boss Jim Dolan, Mafioso Sal Borneo, and the Dodge brothers are superb. His dramatization of these characters helps compensate for the book's relatively thin plot. D.J.S. © AudioFile 2001, Portland, Maine [Published: AUG/ SEP 01]
