THE WHITECHAPEL CONSPIRACY

Thomas Pitt’s latest investigative triumph--bringing a distinguished soldier to justice for the murder of a friend--changes his life when the man’s powerful allies have Pitt reassigned to London’s seedy East End, where Jack the Ripper committed his murders several years before. This abridgment deemphasizes the story lines of familiar protagonists Pitt and wife Charlotte to concentrate on two secondary characters -- Gracie the maid and Sgt. Tellman -- as they seek evidence to help Pitt regain his former post. It’s an interesting choice, which gives narrator David McCallum a chance to enjoy himself with the lower-class accents and repressed emotions of these characters.
