Ruth Field, an elderly widow living on the coast of Australia, welcomes the assistance and companionship of Frida, the government caregiver sent to assist her--but things are not exactly as they seem. Lisbeth Kennelly narrates at a slow, even pace that reflects the winding path of Ruth's thoughts and recollections. Ruth's voice is quiet and childlike, while Frida's is a counterpoint, brash, less refined, and louder. The story unwinds slowly, and Kennelly's reading and Australian accent make the listening experience interesting even as the story becomes more disturbing. Kennelly maintains her pacing through the climax, highlighting Ruth's cluttered mind as she struggles to comprehend her life, her memories, and her dependence on Frida.
