In this sardonic view of the urban male, Kirby Heyborne is an excellent choice of narrator. Paul is the quintessential awkward, alienated modern man. Heyborne manages to give this unsympathetic protagonist a tinge of humor. And his ironic tone is fitting for the minutia that occupies most of this novel's plot. Heyborne's pitch and cadence evoke humor as Paul disregards everyone from his girlfriend to his parents. A shifting emphasis--breaking at the beginning, stressing the end--makes each sentence a unique experience, thereby preventing the listener from dismissing the book altogether.
