Florida's checkered history is recounted in scrupulous detail in this work by journalist Allman. Narrator James Patrick Cronin leads listeners on a journey that seeks to dispel the many myths surrounding Florida's history, development, and present-day tribulations. Cronin's narration is engaging and varied, especially in the author's extensive diatribe against the state's history of institutionalized racism and others forms of oppression, which have been overshadowed by Florida's image as a vacation paradise. However, Cronin's vocal talents are not enough to keep the work from becoming tiresome in its overwhelmingly negative and jaded tone.
