Sammy Bell is killed in an apparent hit-and-run--except that the driver appears to have backed over the body before fleeing the scene! So begins the fourth in this series of police procedurals. Author Bill Knox places Chief Inspector Colin Thane and sidekick Detective Inspector Phil Moss of the Glasgow C.I.D. on the greasy side of high-stakes car racing. Murder leads them to scams and chop shops, Glaswegian style. Narrator James Bryce is completely at home with the slang of the Scottish underworld. American readers may have difficulty interpreting the more arcane expressions; however, it won’t be Bryce’s fault. His characterizations are thoroughly believable and delightfully differentiated.
