Depression-era struggles are magnified when a good-for-nothing husband abandons his pregnant wife and two children. Fellow ghetto-dwellers and the police assist in their struggle to survive. Roe Kendall does an especially good job with the lead and the other women’s parts. However, her rendering of the two young male leads makes it difficult to differentiate between them. Still, she narrates about a dozen different characters with poise, providing listeners with a heartwarming story. A.G.H. © AudioFile 2001, Portland, Maine [Published: OCT/ NOV 01]
