Powers explores the role of natural gas in the modern economy and its mythology as an answer to an oil economy. He contrasts it with the realities, limitations, and problems that lie within believing this narrative. Michael Puttonen has a compelling voice--deep and gravelly. He manages to tease out the nuances of complicated passages and keeps a steady narrative pace. However, he lacks the levels of emphasis and energy needed for this text. The author is making a powerful and engaged argument about how the economy is setting a course for failure, but Puttonen does not communicate that sense of urgency.
