Narrator Gordon Griffin does a fine job delivering Ellis's unique police procedural, which features Detective Inspector Plantagenet as the series' lead character. The setting is Eborby, a fictional York, where the Grim Reaper pays a visit shortly before a murder. Griffin skillfully meets the challenge of a range of characters of all ages, stations, and accents. When a murder occurs in a house full of students, the past and present collide as the investigation reveals that similar murders occurred in the house 100 years earlier and 12 years earlier. Are they connected? Joe and his boss, Emily Thwaite, prevail in this entertaining story, which combines history, a bit of the occult, and subtle humor.
