THE RAINBOW

At the center of our great, pulsating darkness burns the coldly luminous Rainbow, the brilliant prism of life and color that draws all people to Itself. Lawrence's vision hovers on the rim of this darkness and takes us on a tumultuous ride through three generations of the Brangwen family, sixty years in all, culminating in the passionately intense and purposeful young Ursula Brangwen. Maureen O'Brien's reading is forceful, yet controlled, passionate without being cloying, as time and again in each generation the reader approaches the heart, the center, the Rainbow, God, a God who, in Lawrence's vision, so loves us that He refuses to be some niggling judge presiding over a blindly groping humanity. O'Brien reads the Brangwens, both women and men, as vital people, with instinctive lines that are both sensual and spiritual; always they are whole and organic as they are drawn inexorably into the Rainbow.
