This complex novel is written in 10 different narrative voices; characters range from a Victorian lady detective to a bureaucrat who might have come out of 1984. Each voice, in turn, delivers its own dialogue, and Luke Daniels manages not only to capture each narrator's voice but also to give us the voices that would be created by that narrator. Each of the tales has a different vision or version of the imaginary city, and each is rooted in uncertainty and a lack of sufficient information. It's a superb reading of a difficult and sometimes confusing book, and Daniels does what a narrator can to keep the listener rooted in a shifting fictional landscape. D.M.H.
