Narrator Allyson Johnson creates a futuristic atmosphere for this space opera. Assassins attacked during Captain Liam Synar’s wedding to Pleiadian Ania Looren, forcing them into a terrible dilemma. To save Ania’s life, Liam attached his demon, Malachi, to her essence, disregarding her wishes to die in peace. Johnson expresses the wistful nature of Liam and Ania’s lost opportunities in an appealing, warm voice. Malachi’s arch, purring voice adds interest to his enigmatic personality. Commanding phrasing evokes an otherworldly atmosphere, but this performance choice sometimes misses the nuances of dialogue or secondary characters. Although marred slightly by breathy sounds, the cliff-hanger ending of this novella will have listeners reaching for the next installment to learn Liam and Ania’s fate.
