In the first installment of the Gower Street Detectives series, narrator Lindy Nettleton portrays the unlikable Sidney Grice, a private detective, in appropriately snooty tones. Grice’s sharp-witted but naïve ward, Miss March Middleton, is characterized in a gentle voice even when she’s being caustic. The duo solves a horrific murder in London in 1882, helping Inspector Pond of the London Police. Nettleton uses a soft tone to deliver the narrative and in dialogue shifts to clipped intonations and Cockney accents when necessary. Flashbacks from Middleton’s past are read without pause or verbal shift—so the listener must pay attention. The long-winded investigation includes graphic scenes of murder, poverty, slums, and disease. M.B.K. © AudioFile 2014, Portland, Maine [Published: MAY 2014]
