Narrator Stephen Bel Davies uses an earnest voice to tell Walter Kirn's story. Kirn was witness to an elaborate, befuddling series of lies told by a murderer. Bel Davies's clear, everyman tone is refreshingly grounding as the story spins its web. His performance juxtaposes well with the true story of Kirn's unusual friendship with a man he thought was an eccentric heir to the Rockefeller fortune but who turned out to be a manipulative serial imposter. This bizarre story is well suited to the audio format, and Bel Davies distinguishes among voices memorably. Sometimes the events seem too strange to be believed, but that drama is what may keep one listening. L.B.F. © AudioFile 2014, Portland, Maine [Published: APRIL 2014]
